The Gqeberha National Priority Violent Crime team of Serious Organised Crime Investigation of the Hawks apprehended Sinako Magi ((33) on 24 October 2023 for allegations of a bank robbery. Magi appeared in Gqeberha New Law court on the very same day.
According to Hawks spokesperson, Captain Yolisa Mgolodela, it is alleged that on 22 November 2021, two men entered the Absa Bank branch at Govan Mbeki Street in Central Gqeberha.
“The duo allegedly pretended to be clients. One of them reportedly approached the teller and handed over a note on a paper, forcefully instructing the teller to hand over the cash in her drawer to avoid injuries or death.
“The teller is reported to have complied with the instruction and handed over more than R27 000 that was in her drawer,” said Mgolodela.
“Both suspects reportedly left the bank after receiving the money. Investigations ensued after the matter was reported to the Hawks, hence the arrest of Magi on 24 October 2023. Magi is said to be serving a 15-year sentence in a Western Cape prison similarly,” Mgolodela added.
“Magi was brought before the court in Gqeberha New Law court, and the matter was remanded to 7 November 2023 for legal representation. His co-accused is still at large and being sought by the police.”
