A three-year-old girl has died after being electrocuted when she picked up an electrical wire in Magxaki Street, KwaZakhele.
The girl, Khazima Dweni, was allegedly playing with her sister in the yard of their neighbour’s house at approximately 16:00 yesterday, March 16, when she picked up an electrical wire that was on the ground and was electrocuted in the process.
Police spokesperson, Capt. André Beetge, said that the wire was part of an illegal connection between neighbours.
When emergency medical services arrived, the little girl was declared dead on arrival. Her family then disconnected the wire.
“It is with empathy that police attended the scene and the SAPS wish to caution home owners/tenants not to make illegal connections to municipal electricity supply grids on their own. This practice is dangerous, not only to the people effecting the connection, but also to innocent people such as this 3-year-old girl that passed away due to these unsafe illegal connections,” Beetge said.
An Inquest case was opened at KwaZakhele Police Station.
