A 22-year-old wanted murder and attempted murder suspect was arrested on 29 November by members of the Anti-Gang Unit in Booysen Park after months on the run.
Col. Priscilla Naidu, police spokesperson, said it is alleged that a 31-year-old woman was in Desdemonia Close in Booysen Park on 29 January this year when she was approached by three unknown males. “They demanded her cell phone and as she reached for her phone, one of the suspects fired shots at her. She sustained injuries in her stomach, left upper thigh and right arm. The victim was six-months pregnant at the time. The suspects fled the scene. The baby passed away,” Naidu said.
The suspect was known to the complainant and a case of murder and attempted murder was opened for investigation. “The suspect, who is a gang member, has been evading police since the incident.”
The suspect is also implicated in an attempted murder which allegedly took place on 16 September this year in Khayamnandi in Despatch. “It is alleged that at about 03:30 on the mentioned date, the 22-year-old victim was informed that his girlfriend wanted to see him. As he was walking in Bantu Holomisa Road, the suspect and another male approached him and started shooting at him. No injuries were sustained,” Naidu said.
The complainant also knew the suspect and his friend. A case of attempted murder was under investigation.
At about 01:00 this morning, 29 November the Anti-Gang Unit members arrested the suspect at a house in Kayne Street in Booysen Park.
“He is detained on both cases of murder and attempted murder, as well as another case of attempted murder. He will appear in the Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage Magistrate’s Courts respectively.”
