Growing up shy and constantly in his own world, Duwaan Tyreeck Jantjies never thought he’d ever consider taking up being a musician as a career. ‘Dream Way’, as he is often referred to when performing, used to love drawing animation characters growing up, especially Dragon Ball Z characters.
“It was something about how determined the characters were that I was fond of. I always knew I loved art, but wasn’t 100 percent sure about what I wanted to pursue as a career,” the Gqeberha-born artist said.
Although Jantjies wrote his first song in high school, it was only in 2018 when he met up with the people he now describes as his close friends and business partners. The group of youngsters later formed a team called Ophline Music, where they combine their love for fashion, music, events and photography.
“We use our skills not only to work on ourselves, but to give opportunities to those who lack the resources we used to,” he explained.
“I do a lot of storytelling and expressing how I feel about certain things going on in my life. Whether I’m happy, in love, sad or motivated, I do it through my music, it’s my outlet. The genres you would most likely hear are Rap, RnB and Afro Pop. I use writing lyrics as a way of escaping a lot of what I went through growing up, from depression, peer pressure or gangsterism; whether it be family issues or friends that weren’t healthy for me,” said Jantjies, describing his music.
He is currently living in Johannesburg with his team, working hard, and taking every opportunity that comes his way to make his music career a success.
“I recently released a music video for a song called Better than Before, which was shot in Gqeberha, directed by Johannes Witbooi, and is available on YouTube. I wrote the song after being part of the Sportscene X Puma Put Me On 2022 competition.
“Although I did not win first place, I vowed to come back better than before, as the title suggests,” proudly said.
When it comes to plans for the future, Jantjies wants to expand and get more creative with his music style, as well as set global standards for Ophline Music as a company.
