ALMOST two years after her sister died in a tragic car accident with three other people, Rushana Ahmed will honour the memory of her late sister, Raeesa, by doing something for those less fortunate – just as her little sister would have wanted.
Rushana is hoping to raise R21 000 in June to be donated to Gelvan Park Frail Aged Home, in memory of Raeesa who would have celebrated her 21st birthday on June 13.
Raeesa was 19 when she was involved in a head-on collision with another vehicle on the N2, close to Baywest in October 2021.
Raeesa, driving a VW Polo, and two of her three passengers, including 14-year-old Raeez Thompson, and the driver of the other car, died on impact. Only one passenger in the Polo survived.
Ahmed said that the years following her sister’s death have been tough, because it does not get any easier.
“We talk about her every day, and also ask each other what she would have done in a certain situation. Raeesa was a fun, loving and happy person. She brought joy into so many people’s lives. She enjoyed swimming, stance events and being around her family and friends.
“Every happy occasion has some sadness. We miss her but find comfort in the fact that she lived her life to the fullest, impacted so many peoples’ lives and that she’s in a better place,” said Ahmed.
She is making an appeal to members of the community to donate towards this initiative.
“I am looking for 105 people to donate R200 each, to reach the goal of R21 000. However, any amount will be appreciated,” she said.
Ahmed added that she chose this home as the beneficiary because, as a family, they agreed that people often forget about the old age homes and during the grieving process they have realised how important family is.
“We want to make their stay away from their loved ones comfortable, and we want them to have everything they need.
“We specifically chose this because we heard about the financial situation that the home is in. This donation can contribute to assisting the home with all the expenses,” she explained.
“Raeesa was always kind to others and would have appreciated this initiative. She was a true friend to all and, by remembering her, I really hope that we all can be kind to one another and live our lives to the fullest.”
