THE Nelson Mandela Bay Covid-19 Disaster Management Forum is concerned about the rapidly increasing number of infections that have spread to almost all of the areas in the metro.
Forum chairperson and Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Disaster Management Director, Shane Brown, emphasised that the fight against the spread of the virus will be determined by the most basic but critically important things.
“We need to practise social distancing, wear face masks at all times and wash or sanitise our hands regularly. Avoid touching your eyes, mouth and nose.
“Also avoid crowded places like get-togethers, braais or parties with friends or family. Behave responsibly and be safe at all times.
“These are the simple measures that will save us from this pandemic,” he pleaded.
According to Brown, the intensive work to empower local residents with knowledge about the virus is continuing but that it is up to every individual to always have their guard up.
He also added that although the increasing numbers could very well be attributed to the improved performance in testing and availability of results, the numbers are still a serious cause for concern.
Led by Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s interim executive mayor, Tshonono Buyeye, coordinated work to fight against the spread of Covid-19 is taking place steadily across the metro.
Speaker of Council, Buyelwa Mafaya, recently led a delegation of Mayoral Committee Members and councillors on an awareness drive that focused on farm areas in the Rocklands and Greenbushes areas. During the drive, the delegation donated hand sanitisers, soap and face masks to residents from informal settlements on different farms.
Brown also mentioned that the MMC for Corporate Services, Makhi Feni, continued the awareness drive in Walmer Township.
“They also handed over sanitisers and face masks to residents here.
“Walmer is one of the focus areas within the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro,” he added.
Joint awareness and enforcement efforts by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, the Department of Health and the police continue in areas such as, Motherwell, KwaZakhele and Zwide.
