IN the comfort of her own home Jessica Springer, a fourth year IIE Bachelor of Education in Foundation Phase Teaching student, has been using her passion for teaching this national lockdown to make story books for the Grade 1 and 2 learners at Adolph Schauder Primary School.
“Buying books and having access to secondhand books during national lockdown is challenging, so I decided to improvise and use my creativity to help encourage reading from a young age.
“Physically making the books is a lot more personal and I really want the children to feel as though they are special. I want them to realise that people do put time and effort into their educational success,” she said.
The IIE’s Varsity College Port Elizabeth VC Voice student body is running a book drive to collect 140 story books, in English or Afrikaans, for the Grades 1 and 2s.
The IIE’s Varsity College national 2020 corporate social initiative is The Adopt a School Foundation and the Port Elizabeth campus has adopted Adolph Schauder Primary School.
