Police nab five suspects for murder of vagrant in Gqeberha

Swift reaction between Gqeberha K9 unit, Flying Squad and Metro Police led to the speedy arrest of five suspects after a group of vagrants was assaulted in Central on Thursday evening, June 8.

According to Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg, police spokesperson, it is alleged that at approximately 21:15, Gqeberha K9 unit, Flying Squad and Metro Police were patrolling in Rink Street, Central when they noticed a group of people standing next to a man that was laying in the street.

“The person was badly assaulted and died due to his injuries. According to information, five suspects assaulted the group who were sleeping. The deceased could not escape their wrath and was fatally beaten,” Janse van Rensburg said.

The suspects had fled towards a petrol station in Rink Street.

“The police members and Metro Police were quick to react and arrested the five suspects. The deceased is presently unknown and is believed to be in his fifties.”

The suspects, aged between 31 and 41 years old, will appear in the Gqeberha Magistrate’s Court on Monday, June 12 on a charge of murder.
