IN a significant move aimed at bolstering law enforcement efforts, the South African Police Service (SAPS) has officially concluded its recruitment and selection process for the first batch of 10 000 recruits for the fiscal year 2024/2025.

This announcement marks a pivotal step forward in enhancing the country’s policing capacity.

According to SAPS brigadier. Athlenda Mathe, the initial cohort of 4 500 trainees is set to commence training at various SAPS academies on April 22.

This development underscores the SAPS commitment to equipping its personnel with the necessary skills and expertise to effectively tackle crime and maintain public safety.

The subsequent batch, comprising 5 500 recruits, is slated to embark on their training journey in January 2025, with further details on this process expected to be disclosed in due course.

Prospective applicants are urged to await official communication from the SAPS regarding the recruitment timeline.

With an overwhelming response from the public, the SAPS received over one million applications for the 2024/2025 recruitment cycle, highlighting the keen interest among individuals to serve in the police force.

It is emphasised that successful candidates that have undergone all requisite recruitment stages will receive a written notification to proceed with their training. The SAPS underscores its commitment to ensuring a transparent, merit-based selection process devoid of any bias, nepotism, or discrimination.

Upon completion of the Basic Police Development Learning Programme (BPDLP), the newly-trained constables are poised to reinforce policing operations across high-crime areas, detective units, and specialised units such as Public Order Policing (POPs), thereby strengthening law enforcement capabilities nationwide.

“The SAPS has in the last two years trained and deployed 20 000 police officers to stations and units, to bolster policing and our efforts to combat crime.

“We have no doubt that these new recruits are a further step towards a safer country,” said Mathe.
