IF there was ever a sport made to adhere to COVID-19 regulations, it’s fencing.
“They use masks, gloves, sanitiser, don’t touch each other and keep their distance – sounds ideal, right,” said Jessica Raper, one of the Excelsior Fencing Club coaches.
“Fencing is a safe sport. It intrigues the mind and it’s fun, commonly called physical chess. Everyone can kick a ball or run, but some kids prefer more challenging sport and become really good in fencing.
“It helps with critical thinking and problem solving skills too – life skills that we all need,” Raper said.
She added that families tend to bring all their kids for try outs.
“Many home-schooled children join our club because it gives them an opportunity for individual growth as well as competition participation.”
- Try outs are on Tuesdays or Thursdays at WERK2 Baakens Valley. All fencers aged eight to over 60 are welcome. No fitness level required and all kit is provided for beginners. To book a Musketeer session, contact Jessica Raper at 084 996 4498.
