Ex-husband of missing Gqeberha woman to be charged with attempted murder

The estranged ex-husband of missing Bethelsdorp woman, Desiree Baartman, will be charged with attempted murder and is expected to appear in the Gqeberha Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 20 June.

According to Colonel Priscilla Naidu, police spokespers, police conducted a thorough forensic investigation at Baartman’s house on Saturday, 17 June.

“There are signs of possible foul play,” Naidu said. A firearm was also confiscated.

Baartman left her home in Nagel Street, Extension 29, Bethelsdorp on Friday, 9 June at approximately 10:00. She never returned home.

“The search for the missing woman continues with the K9 Search and Rescue unit, Anti-Gang Unit and SAPS Bethelsdorp conducted a search in nearby bushes and surrounding areas today, 19 June,” Naidu added.

Baartman was reported missing by her ex-husband (59) on Wednesday, June 14 and he has since been detained for questioning.

It is alleged that the estranged couple lived together after their divorce.

Police are appealing to anyone who can assist in tracing Baartman or may know of her whereabouts to contact SAPS Bethelsdorp, D/W/O Ben Killian on 072 342 7424 or D/Const Akhona Royi on 078 404 8296 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or the nearest police station.
