GREAT sadness hit the cricket community at the passing of Princess Selani, who died on March 25.
Ngqiva, as she was affectionately known, devoted her life to cricket through her dedication to the scoring of the game. She was an active member of the Eastern Province Cricket Scorers Association for the past 25 years.
“This is a sad moment for the cricket fraternity in the Eastern Province,” commented Tono Mle, chair of the Cricket sub-committee of the EPC Board. “Princess was one of the top talents in terms of scoring within the province, and her willingness to share information was one of her best qualities. She had a huge passion for cricket, something which we will all miss. May her soul rest in peace.”
Some of Princess’s most significant achievements include scoring in two cricket world cups, the 2009 IPL hosted by South Africa, the Mzansi Super League, the Inaugural SA20, and most, if not all, the international and domestic matches hosted at St George’s Park Cricket Stadium during her time as a scorer.
Princess was also the chairperson of the Eastern Province Cricket Scorers Association and served as an executive member of the United Brothers Cricket Club based in Zwide.
“Condolences to the Selani family; I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Princess. May the loving memories of her help you find peace during this difficult time,” said Laurence Matroos, Cricket South Africa Match Officials Coach.
She leaves behind four children and two siblings.
