TIMBER Solutions, a local green manufacturer specialising in recycled plastic outdoor furniture and applications is encouraging all schools to participate in this year’s Bottle Cap Collection Schools Challenge.
The bottle cap project was launched two years ago when local residents were encouraged to collect soft drink and water bottle caps.
“It exceeded all our expectations. We were flooded with enthusiastic collectors. Residents stated that they could not go anywhere without picking up bottle caps,” Linda Heymans of Timber Solutions said.
She said although the challenge started late last year and only lasted for a period of three months, the interest was as enthusiastic as ever, resulting in a total weight of 2.5 tons of bottle caps being collected.
“As part of educating the learners, we also offered presentations to the schools, so, learners could see how a new product is manufactured from something as small as a mere bottle cap. All products manufactured by Timber Solutions are made of 100% recycled plastic.
“No other products are added. The product is a complete green product, extremely durable and needs no maintenance,” Heymans said.
She further described that the project was aimed at empowering and instilling a sense of environmental responsibility among the residents, especially the youth.
“Recycling is fast becoming more and more important in all aspects of our lives. We have, therefore, introduced this project to the youth as they are eager to share their knowledge with their siblings and parents, reaching households all over the metro.
“Collecting something as small as a bottle cap is only but a start to becoming more aware of the impact of recycling.
Although we have started the project with just collecting bottle caps, we have introduced a bigger variety of items which we will be collecting this year,” Heymans said.
Entries will end in October and prizes will be awarded to the top three schools. Schools that wish to participate can send an email to info@timbersolutionspe.co.za.
