The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has expressed its
sadness at the tragic passing of one of its Electricity and Energy officials.

The official, Stephanus “Fanie” Hulme (57) was responding to
an outage which affected some areas of the metro. The incident happened while
working on site at the Arras Road distribution substation.

According to the NMBM, he was replacing a fuse on a low voltage
board when the switchgear exploded.

“It is with shock and sadness to hear about the untimely
passing of the official in the line of duty. Mr Fanie Hulme was one of the few
artisans that sacrificed to be on standby over the long weekend.

“He passed on in the line of duty serving the community of
the Nelson Mandela Bay. We would like to send our deepest condolences to his
family and colleagues,” MMC for Electricity and Energy, Luxolo Namette,
said.

Police in Nelson Mandela Bay have opened an inquest docket after the electrician that was electrocuted at an electrical substation on Saturday, died.

Electrocuted electrician dies

The electrician that sustained severe burn wounds when a substation in Lorraine caught fire this weekend, has died.

Municipal worker, 57-year-old Stephanus Hulme, was working on a substation in Arras Road, Lorraine, when there was a suspected explosion and Hulme was electrocuted and sustained severe burn wounds.

Police spokesperson, Capt. Sandra Janse van Rensburg, confirmed the incident.

“It is alleged that at approximately 14:15, Stephanus Hulme was admitted in hospital and he succumbed to his injuries at about 22:00 the same evening. Circumstances surrounding the incident is yet to be established,” Janse van Rensburg said.

“An inquest was opened and will be investigated by Walmer police station.
