An elderly Walmer couple was assaulted and robbed in their home in Alcock Road yesterday, May 10, by two armed suspects.

Police spokesperson, Col. Priscilla Naidu, said that at approximately 11:00, the 78-year-old woman was busy working on her computer in the study when two unknown males walked in through the open sliding door. One was armed with a firearm and the other with a knife.

“The complainant was assaulted and tied up with a cable tie. The suspects then ransacked the house. The husband, aged 80 years, returned home and he too was assaulted and tied up,” Naidu said.

“The husband later managed to untie himself and his wife. The woman climbed through the window and alerted her neighbour,” Naidu added.

The suspects left in the couple’s 1999 dark blue VW Golf 5 and a flat screen TV, cell phones, a tablet and other household items were taken.

The couple was taken to hospital for treatment.

SAPS Walmer detectives are investigating a case of house robbery.

Police are once again urging residents to make sure that security gates are locked when leaving doors open. Security measures must be stepped up and extra panic buttons should be installed in rooms frequently utilised by occupants or in possession especially when elderly persons are living on their own.
