GQEBERHA – Armed with garbage bags and gloves, members of the 1st Sunridge Scout Group spent a winter morning helping keep Kings Beach clean, collecting eight bags of litter during a community clean-up on 20 June.

The clean-up brought together 20 participants, including Meerkats, Cubs, Scouts, Scouters and family members, who walked along the beachfront picking up litter.

Den scouter, Megan Mudie, said the initiative formed part of the group’s ongoing commitment to serving the community.

“We had a total of 20 participants, including Meerkats, Cubs, Scouters and family members, who spent the morning walking alongside the beach, picking up any litter we came across,” she said. “We were able to fill eight bags with rubbish.”

Mudie added that the clean-up was one of several community service projects undertaken by the group this year.

“These include a towel collection for SANCCOB, a book drive in aid of the Shine Literacy Centre and a Winter Woolly Drive. Our group is extremely passionate about giving back to our community, so we aim to participate in at least one community service project every school term,” she said.

Beyond community outreach, the group has remained active with programmes designed to build scouting skills and encourage outdoor adventure.

“Other events our group has hosted include the Cub and Scout Skillkana, which is aimed at testing and developing scout skills. Our Scouts have also gone on hikes, attended camps and taken part in a number of Scout-run activities,” Mudie shared.

The 1st Sunridge Scout Group caters for boys and girls in three age groups: Meerkats (5-6 years), Cubs (7-10 years) and Scouts (11-18 years).

According to Mudie, the group has a busy programme planned for the remainder of the year, including camps, hikes and activities for members across all three sections.
