Members of the Eastern Cape Youth Choir (ECYC) recently held a successful beach clean-up event from Shark Rock Pier, extending along the beachfront to Something Good Roadhouse.

This initiative was aimed at raisinge awareness about coastal conservation, and encouraginge the community to get involved in preserving the natural environment.

The youngsters gathered at the designated area, equipped with gloves, bags, and a strong determination to make a positive difference. Spirits were high as the youth choir and other volunteers set out to collect litter and debris that had either washed ashore or been left behind by beachgoers.

“The clean-up had both aesthetic and environmental benefits. By removing harmful waste such as plastic bottles, bags, and other non-biodegradable materials, volunteers helped to protect marine life and ecosystems from pollution and degradation. This effort also restored the beauty of the beach, making it more enjoyable for both locals and visitors,” said Sherene Doubell.

A notable feature of the event was the active participation of the ECYC, including the choir conductor and committee members, who demonstrated a keen commitment to environmental conservation.

Their enthusiasm and dedication were inspiring, illustrating a growing awareness of the importance of safeguarding the environment.

As communities work to protect the planet for future generations, initiatives like the ECYC’s beach clean-up remind us that collective action can lead to meaningful change.

The event served as a call to action, showing that through small steps towards conservation in our everyday lives, everyone can play a part in creating a cleaner, healthier environment.

Doubell added that the success of this beach clean-up underscores the importance of community involvement in environmental protection, a testament to the impact that dedicated individuals and groups can have when they come together to work towards a common goal.

The ECYC hopes to continue this momentum with future initiatives promoting environmental awareness and encouraging active participation in conservation efforts.

The ECYC is a diverse choir comprising 73 young choristers, representing schools from Gqeberha and its surrounding towns.

Its main objective is to promote choral music among learners between the ages of 14 and 19.

The choir’s work mainly targets youth, from ages 14 to 19 in high schools.

The ECYC believes in working alongside the youth to help them to know their value, to know that whatever they have been through, seen or experienced, they are worth the very best through the medium of music.

Besides the one-to-one approach, ECYC also works toward a broader goal of creating positive change in social norms.

Many talented youth bypass the opportunity to pursue their talents as the common route to societal pressures results in them ending up with alcohol addiction, drug addiction, and gangsterism.

The ECYC identifies and, nurtures the participants, and allowing them to find expression through choral music of a variety of musical genres and showcasing it through vibrant performances at various events.
