A TOTAL of 31 powerlifters from all over the province competed in the Eastern Cape Classic Powerlifting and Bench Press Championships that took place at Cape Recife on September 7.
Of the 31 lifters, seven were disabled, nine were newcomers and 15 had competed before.
They did very well, setting up and breaking a whole lot of new records.
In the sub junior women 57kg and 84+ divisions, newcomers Charné Feuth (Brandwag High School) and Colleen Brown (Despatch High School) had a good first competition.
Feuth was also the best sub junior newcomer and woman of the day, while Ance Vermaak (Brandwag High School) was the best sub junior.
Minke Colling (Brandwag High School) again bettered her totals and set up new records.
In the sub junior men 120+ kg division, another newcomer, Francois Spamer, was the best sub junior man of the day, while Simon Curtain was the best sub junior man.
The event also served as the qualifiers for the SA Classic Powerlifting Championships, which will be held in Potchefstroom on December 6, as well as the SA Disabled Championships that will be held in Port Elizabeth in March 2020.
Lifters who qualified for the SA Classic Cham- pionships are:
Sub-junior: Minke Colling (57kg), Anika Ferreira (57kg), Ance Vermaak (63kg), Charne Feuth (63kg), Heike Groenewald (72kg), Colleen Brown (84+kg), Simon Curtain (83kg), Francois Spamer (120+kg) and Rutgar Leibach (120kg).
Junior: Patricia Harding (47kg), Nicola Maritz (63kg) and Ignatius Muller (83kg).
Senior: Megan Minnaar (47kg)
Master 1: Elisabeth Barry (47kg)
Master 3: André Ludik (120kg)
