AS part of recognising Workers’ Month, the Eastern Cape Department of Labour will undertake information sessions solely putting its focus on domestic workers in the province.
According to a media statement by the department, domestic workers will be educated about the amendments in the social protection benefits such, as the Unemployment Insurance Fund Act, Compensation of Injuries and Diseases Act and National Minimum Wage Act. These information sessions are done to influence compliance with labour laws and the department will in this way assist non-compliant employers and act against those who flout labour laws.
Regardless of the worker’s month drive, the department says it continues to make inroads into non-compliance with basic conditions through inspections that are conducted in sectors considered perpetual offenders of labour laws enacted to protect the rights of workers.
“The domestic sector is considered one of the most vulnerable and these platforms will ensure that domestic workers’ rights are not infringed and that compliance with labour legislations is encouraged,” said chief director of Provincial Operations Nomfundo Douw-Jack.

- Port Elizabeth: Sunday, May 19: N.U. 2 Community Hall, Motherwell.
- Mthatha: Sunday, May 26: Mthatha Airport Hangars
