PROUD owners of pit bulls – and other breeds of dogs – are being called on to come together to create awareness for animal welfare and raise funds for the #SayNoToPoison campaign.

Pit & Proud_JustPitbull will be hosting a Pitbull Pride Walk on Sunday, October 27 and they are looking for as many pooches and owners as possible to join them.

According to Marizanne Ferreira of Pit & Proud_JustPitbull, the event was initially a national event, hosted in major cities.

“I was one of the ‘founders’ of this walk approximately seven years ago.

“The purpose of the walk was to bust the sad and negative myth on Pitties. We wanted the world to see that they are only dogs and in the right hands (training, socialising and sterilisation), they are outstanding companions to old and young. All funds raised and pet food received with these walks were donated to various animal and human charities,” she said.

The Pitbull Pride Walk on October 27 will be Ferreira’s 21st one held for Port Elizabeth and the surrounding areas. This year’s beneficiary is Arnold Slabbert’s #SayNoToPoison project.

All dog breeds are welcome on the walk. For those that need a little more space to manoeuvre, they will need a yellow ribbon on their leash.

A donation of dog food will gain donors entry into a lucky draw with great prizes up for grabs.

Owners are urged to bring along their own bags to clean up after their dogs. There will be coffee and snacks to purchase.

The walk will take place from Grass Roof Farm Stall on October 27. Registration will take place from 08:00 and a free gift awaits the first 100 entrants. The MC will be Roland Gaspar.

Entry is R30 per dog and R5 per person.
