THE Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber has announced the appointment of Ashwin Daya in the role of chief operations officer, effective October 1.
Daya, who comes with extensive experience, has worked in the automotive, beverages and renewable energy sectors, and has also served as chief financial officer for the Mandela Bay Development Agency for 15 years.
“In response to the changing and challenging operating environment in which business finds itself, the chamber has implemented a new strategy. Adjacent to this we have adopted an action and activist orientated approach, which requires that we collaborate with a broad spectrum of stakeholders,” said Denise van Huyssteen, chief executive officer of the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber.
“The appointment of a new chief operations officer is key in enabling us to strengthen our operations and ensure that our targeted interventions achieve the required impacts.”
“Our local businesses are operating under incredibly challenging and difficult circumstances which require that as a collective we are innovative, agile and flexible in finding solutions which will ensure that much needed investment and jobs are retained and attracted to Nelson Mandela Bay.”
Daya comes with a track record of demonstrated success specifically in the areas of operations, finance, governance and leadership.
“We are excited that we were able to attract someone of his calibre to join our team and look forward to the contributions he will make to the chamber and serving the businesses which we represent.”
Daya has a wide range of qualifications including a Bachelor of Commerce degree from UNISA, a management development diploma from Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMU), a project management certificate from UNISA Graduate School of Business Leadership, and has completed the municipal finance management programme as per National Treasury minimum competency requirements.
In addition to this, he has served on the NMU audit and risk committee, acted as treasurer for Nirvana Performing Arts Circle and as a mentor for the Business Women’s Association’s mentorship programme.
