DA announces intention to suspend Nqaba Bhanga following Facebook post over Helen Zille

Nqaba Bhanga

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Eastern Cape has unanimously resolved to serve DA member Nqaba Bhanga with a notice of intention to suspend him from all party activities pending the outcome of an investigation into claims of bringing the party in disrepute, among other transgressions of the DA’s standards of conduct for its members.

In a statement by DA Eastern Cape Provincial Leader Andrew Whitfield, the party said the intention to suspend Nqaba Bhanga follows after he publicly labelled another DA member, Helen Zille, a “racist” and posted unfounded allegations against her on social media.

“After receiving the notice of intention to suspend him, Bhanga will have 48 hours to respond in writing with reasons as to why he should not be suspended,” Whitfield said.

The PEC has referred the case to the party’s Federal Legal Commission (FLC) for an investigation.

“The DA in the Eastern Cape is deeply disappointed by Bhanga’s conduct which is contrary to his previous commitment to non-racialism and the Party,” Whitfield concluded.

In August 2021 Bhanga was involved in a car accident in Algoa Park where two people from another vehicle died.

Bhanga sustained a fractured wrist and had to undergo surgery due to internal bleeding after the crash that occurred on his birthday on Saturday, August 28, 2021 in Algoa Park at approximately 23:30. This was during the national curfew during lockdown.

Bhanga’s navy Mercedes Benz collided with a grey Audi and both occupants of the Audi died at the scene. They were later identified as 39-year-old Sandile Ronald Sicolo and Nonzwakazi Maho (44). Police opened a case of culpable homicide.
