THE provincial and senior management from across the province embarked on massive operations in Nelson Mandela Bay last week to curb crime in the metro.
A total of 106 officers and 201 members including specialised units, other government departments, detectives and the Metro police conducted cohesive operations in the Motherwell and Mount Road clusters.
Operations included cordon and searches, firearm compliance inspections, visits to shopping malls, execution of warrants of arrest and road block duties in the hot spot areas in both clusters.
Suspect raiding by detective members netted in a total of 108 suspects on cases of murder, attempted murder, house robbery, business robbery, unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition, as well as the execution of warrants of arrest.
Visible policing operations resulted in the arrest of eight suspects for illegal possession of firearms, attempted murder, pointing of a firearm, possession of drugs and undocumented persons.
A total of 237 fines valued at R112 800 were issued. Confiscations included among others dagga, tik, knives, a firearm, gas pistol, ammunition and prescription medication.
Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Liziwe Ntshinga, hailed these arrests and confiscations as a success.
“Our festive season operations in the Nelson Mandela Bay metro concluded with a high impact in the Motherwell and Mount Road Clusters. The effectiveness of these operations is indicative that the SAPS is reasserting the authority of the state as we address lawlessness in identified areas.
“These successes are over and above the arrests achieved during day-to-day proactive and reactive policing,” added Ntshinga.
