THE South African Police Service in Bethelsdorp and the Department of Safety and Liaison have recently partnered to hold an awareness programme for learners from schools in the Bethelsdorp area.
The focus of the awareness was centred on drugs and gangsterism in the community.
According to police spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg, constant outreach to the youth is essential.
“We need to change their minds and encourage them to have a positive purpose in life. Fighting gangsterism and protecting the youth within the Northern Areas needs intervention from various stakeholders within government,” Janse van Rensburg said.
The guest speaker, Wesley Quantoi, is a rehabilitated gangster who gave a touching testimony of his life as a gang member and a drug addict.
Janse van Rensburg added, “The children were very receptive to what the speaker was talking about and it was observed that they could relate with their own personal circumstances within the community.
“Learners were encouraged to get an education and to explore the world outside of the Northern Areas. They were told that if they set their minds on something, they can achieve it and also later return to the area and give back to their communities.”
More awareness programmes will be rolled out throughout the Nelson Mandela Bay metro in an effort to curb crime and drug addiction.
