An anonymous resident has raised serious concerns about the safety of Cleary Park Shopping Centre, describing the facility as “disgusting” and “dangerous.”
The resident highlighted that the building could collapse at any moment, citing a recent incident where the roof of one of the clothing stores collapsed. The resident questioned whether a fatality would be necessary before any action was taken to address these issues.
“This centre caters for so many people who rely on it because other malls are so far, and it’s really tragic that nothing has been done so far,” the resident concluded.
In response, Vickey Moodley from the management of Cleary Park Shopping Centre, provided clarity regarding the ongoing infrastructure improvements at the centre, which she said have been in progress for approximately a year.
Moodley emphasised that due to the size and complexity of the roof structure, and with the safety of shoppers, tenants, and construction workers in mind, the large-scale project must be implemented with utmost care.
“Cleary Park Shopping Centre is committed to providing a safe and pleasant shopping environment for the Gqeberha community. The current infrastructure upgrade represents the centre’s ongoing commitment to maintaining and improving its facilities for the benefit of all stakeholders,” Moodley said.
“This proactive initiative is specifically designed to address and permanently resolve water-related challenges at the centre,” she added.
Moodley noted that while the progress might not be visible to the public, the project has reached approximately 60% completion, with the most intensive phase of construction already behind them.
The scope of works includes structural improvements of critical infrastructure as per engineering specifications, comprehensive waterproofing measures implemented with guarantees, replacement and redesign of gutters and drainage systems, and the installation of new roof sheeting.
“The property managers have experienced maintenance teams actively on site, with multiple response crews available to address any immediate concerns. The project is scheduled for completion by March 2025, weather conditions permitting,” she added.
Moodley acknowledged that the recent extreme weather conditions in Gqeberha, including unprecedented rainfall of over 200mm within 24 hours, have created additional challenges. However, she assured the public that all necessary precautions were being taken to maintain safety standards during this improvement period.
The safety and comfort of tenants, their staff, and valued customers remain the top priority for Cleary Park Shopping Centre, Moodley stressed. Comprehensive safety protocols have been implemented during the construction period, and the property managers are working closely with contractors to minimise any disruption to normal operations.
“We appreciate the community’s patience during this essential upgrade process, which will significantly enhance the shopping experience at Cleary Park once completed. We remain committed to maintaining open communication with all stakeholders throughout this improvement project.
For any specific concerns, stakeholders are encouraged to contact our management office directly,” Moodley concluded.
