GQEBERHA: Christo Nel (64), who is accused of murdering elderly Ria Nel (87) this past weekend on 23 August 2025, briefly appeared in the Gqeberha Magistrate’s Court today, 26 August, where he stated he will now have a private attorney.
In a previous court appearance, Nel stated that he would be representing himself, however he has abandoned that route.
As previously reported by the Express, Nel voluntarily surrendered himself to Kabega Park police station on Saturday morning at about 09:30, where he confessed to the alleged crime involving a firearm at sherwood retirement village in Gqeberha.
With no family members present during the court proceedings, Nel appeared dressed in a black top featuring a South African flag and black jeans. He seemed composed.
His matter was remanded to 2 September 2025 for his private attorney to come on record.
He remains in custody.
