GQEBERHA – Christo Nel (64) accused of murdering his elderly mother has been granted bail of R5000 after telling police he shot her to end her unbearable suffering.
Nel, a freelance journalist with a BA Honours in Philosophy, appeared in court on charges of murder after his mother, Ria Nel (87) was found with three gunshot wounds to the head. According to police statements, Nel told investigators that his mother was bedridden and in severe pain, and that he wanted to end her suffering.
Nel, who is unmarried with no children, returned to Gqeberha to care for his ailing mother after working various jobs in the Western Cape.
Before the incident, Nel’s only previous criminal record dates back to 2003, when he received a R2000 fine for drug possession after voluntarily surrendering to police.
Nel’s brother, Hendrick Nel, provided an affidavit in support of the bail application. As one of only two children of the late Ria Nel, Hendrick described his brother as “a good person who would not harm anyone” and emphasised how Christo had cared for their mother right up until her death.
“The mom experienced unbearable pain towards the end of her life,” Hendrick stated in his affidavit.
As previously reported by the Express, according to a media statement by SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana, the suspect presented himself at the Kabega Park police station on Saturday morning, 23 August 2025, at approximately 09:30, where he confessed to shooting his elderly mother.
The police report noted that Nel expressed suicidal intentions following the incident.
