GQEBERHA – Chippa United’s Betway Premiership fixture against Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday, September 12, will no longer be played at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium after the venue failed to meet the Premier Soccer League’s (PSL) requirements.
In a statement issued on Monday, 7 September, Chippa United said the stadium had not been approved following a PSL inspection, with concerns raised about the condition and maintenance of the playing surface.
“The stadium was not approved due to concerns regarding the condition and maintenance of the playing surface,” the club said.
Chippa United has formally applied to the PSL to move the fixture to Buffalo City Stadium in KuGompo City and is awaiting approval.
The club apologised to supporters who had already purchased tickets or made arrangements to attend the match in Nelson Mandela Bay, stating that further information regarding the venue and existing tickets would be provided once the PSL had confirmed the relocation.
The development comes after the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium recently underwent the installation of a new playing surface, which the Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA), which manages the stadium, said formed part of its efforts to maintain the venue as a world-class facility.
In its response to the PSL decision, the MBDA said it respected the League’s decision but remained confident in the stadium’s readiness to host future matches.
“The Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium has recently completed the installation of a new playing surface as part of its ongoing commitment to world class facilities following a successful Springboks vs Barbarian clash,” said MBDA marketing, communication and investment promotion manager Nicole Klokow.
Klokow added that the pitch had undergone intensive restoration ahead of the PSL releasing its season plan.
“We are confident that the venue is ready to host future matches and provide the best possible experience for players and fans,” she said.
The MBDA said it understood the frustration caused by the fixture being moved and that its focus was now on hosting upcoming matches and events.
“We share in the disappointment. Our focus now is on welcoming teams and supporters back for upcoming fixtures and ensuring that every match hosted here reflects the standards expected of a premier venue,” Klokow said.
The stadium previously hosted the Springboks against the Barbarians, while the MBDA said an exciting calendar of events was planned for the venue towards the end of the year.
