THE National Lotteries Commission (NLC) has recognised the exemplary grassroots sports development initiatives being implemented in the Eastern Cape by Khulasande Sports Development and identified the Wonder Kids Programme as recipients of a grant to the value of R401 400 for the next 12 months.

The Khulasande Wonder Kids Programme supports exceptionally talented track and field athletes from previously disadvantaged communities, enabling them to participate on a national and international level. Alongside their endeavours to identify and nurture athletic talent, the initiative also emphasises the importance of each athlete to excel within their chosen life skills and academic careers.

Expressing his gratitude, Khulasande Sports Development director, Thobela Thoba, “On behalf of the organisation, we are extremely grateful to the NLC for the funds that will contribute towards the capacity building initiatives of the Wonder Kids programme and allow talented athletes to grow and prosper.”

Thoba added that The Wonder Kids squad consisted of elite athletes who trained their minds and bodies to perform at the highest levels.

“Due to this, we are actively seeking opportunities to collaborate with physiotherapists, biokineticists and medical doctors to assist the athletes when they need rehabilitation from injuries or fall ill.”

Investec Bank has recently also become proud sponsors of the Khulasande Wonder Kids initiative by donating 12 months’ worth of toiletries and sanitary products for the beneficiary athletes.

“Without the support of sponsors, whether in kind or financial, the Wonder Kids initiative would not have been possible. All donations and support received help to remove some of the social and economic disadvantages faced by beneficiary athletes so they can focus on their academics and training.”

Since 2018, Khulasande Sports Development has produced 19 provincial athletes who have participated in various national competitions.
