DURING the month of July, many South Africans are inspired by the 67 Minutes for Madiba to reach out to the destitute and vulnerable in society.
In line with this spirit of giving, the local branch of the Wings Motorcycle Club invites the community to support their annual canned food drive, the Blikkies Run at the Zwartkops Rowing Club in Redhouse on Saturday, July 20.
The aim of the event is to collect canned and other non-perishable food for underprivileged communities.
Wings MCC works closely with non-profit organisation, People Opposing Poverty in Society (POPS) Foundation in support of its feeding programme. The foundation distributes approximately 60 000 meals per month to impoverished communities across the Bay.
Rushdien Lagerdien, the Wings MCC chairperson, said, “Our aim is to collect more than 1 000 food items. We encourage bikers and their families to support this cause.”
On the day, Wings MCC will also entertain children from various childcare NGOs, including Oosterland, Vistarus, Inn Safe Hands, Joshua’s Heart and Lukhanyiso.
Spokesperson for the POPS Foundation, Mureedah Botha, said the foundation was grateful for the support they received from the annual Blikkies Run.
“Non-perishable and canned foods are very much needed for our food parcels. Every blikkie counts and helps feed a hungry person.”
Lagerdien urged the public to bring their non-perishable food to the event which starts at 10:00 and continues throughout the day. There will be food stalls, entertainment and fun activities for the whole family.
“The entry fee is a donation of canned or any non-perishable food which we directly handover to the POPS Foundation on the day,” said Lagerdien.
POPS Foundation is active in Motherwell, Zwide, Swartkops, Aloes, Chatty extension, Bethelsdorp extension, Timothy Valley, Windvogel, Algoa Park, Helenvale, Gelvandale, Greenbushes, Korsten, Schauderville, Salt Lake, Kwanobuhle, Joe Slovo, Wells Estate and Walmer Township.
“We support families, day care centres, soup kitchens, children’s homes and other childcare institutions. This project will assist in bringing relief to the underprivileged families living in informal settlements and other impoverished communities,” said Botha.
