A 33-year-old man was arrested by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Metro Police on Monday, 8 January 2024, after being caught red-handed vandalising streetlights and stealing cables on the busy N2 road near Bluewater Bay.

The arrest came after a vigilant member of the Bluewater Bay Community Policing Forum reported the crime to the Metro Police at around 15:00.

Metro Police Crime Prevention Unit members were immediately activated, and one arrest was made after the suspect was caught in the act armed with tools and some of the stolen cables.

NMBM Metro Police Acting Commissioner, Advocate Andrew Moses, said the scourge of vandalism and cable theft along the N2 and R75 was of concern to the Metro, and efforts were being made working with other stakeholders to save the infrastructure along the major routes.

“The suspect was detained at the Swartkops Police Station thanks to the swift response from our team.

“The Metro Police, working closely with SAPS, are intensifying efforts to curb the scourge of vandalism and cable theft across our Metro. We have noted with concern the increase of cable theft along the N2, while the R75 is already dark in some areas due to this scourge.”

We wish to thank the vigilant and committed CPF members who continue working with us to fight crime. It will take a concerted effort from all of us to fight this cancer in our communities. As the new year starts, we want to encourage all residents to report such crimes as vandalism continues to steal much-needed resources from us.
