What started out as a gathering with friends in KwaDwesi ended in tragedy when a young woman died after being severely assaulted, allegedly by her boyfriend.

The deceased, 22-year-old Siymanthanda Tiyiwe, was with her boyfriend and other friends in Ginwala Street yesterday, January 31, at approximately 16:00 where they were drinking together. Tiyiwe and her boyfriend had an argument, after which she allegedly attacked him with an empty bottle.

Police spokesperson, Capt. Sandra Janse van Rensburg, said that the boyfriend allegedly retaliated and severely assaulted Tiyiwe.

“While waiting for the ambulance, Tiyiwe passed
away due to her nature of injuries.
The suspect was tracked down at a nearby
tavern and arrested. He is detained on a charge of murder,” she said.

He is expected to appear in the New Brighton Magistrates Court tomorrow, February 2, 2022.

Acting Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner,
Brig. Thandiswa Kupiso, has strongly condemned the murder and added that young girls and women are not toys and punching bags for boys and
men. “They have equal rights to freedom of choice regarding their lives. It is
the responsibility of us all South Africans to end the culture of abuse and
violence perpetrated on our women and children,” Kupiso added.
