The body of a four-year-old girl was found yesterday, October 29, after she and her mother attempted to cross a river near Bloemendal in Gqeberha.
According to police spokesperson Captain Andre Beetge, police divers and K9 Search and Rescue responded to a complaint of drowning at a river close to Nooitgedacht Road.
Beetge reported that it is alleged the mother was busy crossing the river when fast-flowing waters detached her from the four-year-old girl, who was then swept away.
“At about 14:45, the divers and rescue team recovered her body further downstream,” he added.
“An inquest docket was opened and is being investigated by SAPS Bethelsdorp.”
