The body of a 20-year-old man, Aden Niekerk, was discovered yesterday, December 2, following his disappearance while attempting to rescue a swimmer during a in the Sundays River at the Pearson Park slipway on Sunday, December 1.
Elaborating on the incident, Police spokesperson Captain Marius McCarthy reported that, according to police reports, a church group from Gqeberha had an excursion at Pearson Park for the day.
“One of the group members got into difficulty while swimming in the river, and Niekerk went into the water to assist her. It is alleged that the girl who was in difficulty came to the surface and reached safety, but the 20-year-old Aden Niekerk did not surface again,” he explained.
Police spokesperson Siphokazi Mawisa confirmed that the SAPS Search and Rescue unit retrieved his body at about 10:20 on December 2, from the Sundays River.
Mawisa stated that an inquest will be opened, and SAPS Kinkelbos will investigate.
