FOUR local Irish dancers from the McWilliams Academy of Dance studio were recently selected to perform at the South African Tattoo 2018.

The show was part of the centenary celebrations of the legacy of Nelson Mandela. A total of four shows were held at the indoor Sun Arena in Pretoria and included guest artists from Australia, the USA and Switzerland.

Sharing the stage with more than 600 cast members consisting of massed pipes and drums, highland dancers, singers, tap dancers, drum majorettes and more, dancer Jenna Hayes said she was honoured to be a part of it.

“It was a privilege to perform at the biggest show in SA with 40 other Irish dancers selected from around the country and I will definitely apply again next year.

“The atmosphere was electric and we’ve made lifelong friendships” said Hayes.

Fellow dancer Tammy Forbes said, “That was the biggest audience we’ve ever danced for. There were approximately over 30 000 people.

“Even though we rehearsed for up to five hours every day, it was so worth it and I like the fact that a portion of the proceeds will go to charity.”
