GQEBERHA – A night stranded in the remote Baviaanskloof in the Eastern Cape ended with a welcome sigh of relief when four Gqeberha police officers who had been reported missing were found safe and unharmed.

The search brought together SAPS members from neighbouring stations, local farmers, private security companies, Gift of the Givers and the South African National Defence Force, who all played a role in helping to find the four officers.

Warrant Officer Martin Fourie, Constables Lyle Fondling, Azola Mgoduka and Imraan Moosa, all from the Public Order Policing (POP) Unit in Gqeberha, were located at approximately 08.30 this morning.

The four officers had been deployed to assist with stability ahead of the TransBaviaans cycling race when they became stranded.

“Upon their return, their vehicle became stuck along the Baviaanskloof route and, due to a lack of cellphone reception, they were unable to call for assistance,” said police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana. “They walked to the nearest reserve, where they took shelter overnight.”

All four officers are unharmed and are currently being attended to.

Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Vuyisile Ncata said the SAPS was “immensely relieved” that the members had been found safe.

“I extend my deepest gratitude to all role players who assisted: the SAPS members from neighbouring stations who worked tirelessly, Gift of the Givers, local farmers, private security companies in the area, and the South African National Defence Force,” he said.

“Your swift response and cooperation made all the difference.”

Ncata thanked the public and all partners for their support and concern during the search for the four police officers.
