An attempted robbery was thwarted by members of the community this afternoon at an ATM in Korsten.

According to police spokesperson, Capt. André Beetge, the suspects attempted to perform the scam on her, but she got suspicious and screamed for help. Two security officers on duty nearby and numerous members of the public then grabbed two of the suspects and started assaulting them, whilst the third suspect managed to flee.

Gelvandale police reacting to the scene, found the two male suspects on their arrival being held by the security officers. One of the suspects was severely assaulted.

“Nothing was taken from the female victim and an attempted robbery case was opened at Gelvandale SAPS against the two suspects,” Beetge said.

“The 26-year-old male that was injured, was taken under police guard to Livingstone Hospital for medical attention, whilst a 23-year-old suspect will be in police detention. The suspects used a Maroon Datsun Go, which was impounded for further forensic analysis,” Beetge added.

“The two suspects will be appearing before the Gelvandale Magistrates Court on Thursday, July 8, to face the charge of attempted robbery against them.”
