Armed robbery suspects arrested with jewellery worth R1 million

A 38-year-old man allegedly involved in the murder of an elderly man on a farm in Rouxville in the Free State was arrested yesterday afternoon, May 5, by members of Flying Squad and K9 units in Gqeberha.


Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen Nomthetheleli Mene has expressed her appreciation and gratitude for the efforts of the multi-disciplinary team that was established to track and trace suspects involved in a brazen robbery at a jewellery store in Gqeberha on Wednesday, September. 

It is alleged that at about 11:00, ten suspects entered the jewellery store in a mall in Sherwood. The staff were pointed with firearms and jewellery estimated to be R1 million was taken. No one was injured during the incident.

“Through brilliant Crime Intelligence Eastern Cape, intelligence network was activated, and it was established that the suspects were heading for Gauteng.  The two vehicles involved in the robbery that were heading towards  Craddock were identified through the intelligence network,” Colonel Priscilla Naidu of the South African Police Services said. 

“A team comprising of SAPS Cradock Vispol members, SAPS Cookhouse  Highway patrol, SAPS Cradock K9 and a private security company, held way-lay duties. At about 21:45, a white VW Polo was stopped about 10km before Cradock. Five males were arrested and two firearms were recovered. Shortly after, a maroon VW Polo was also stopped and a further five males were arrested, two more firearms confiscated and the stolen jewellery recovered,” Naidu added. 

The 10 suspects are allegedly detained on charges of illegal possession of firearms and possession of suspected stolen property. Detectives are busy investigating their involvement in the jewellery heist. Additional charges may be added as the investigation continues. The suspects, aged between 24 and 37 years old are expected to appear in the Cradock magistrate soon.

Crime Intelligence Eastern Cape confirmed that the arrested suspects are part of a syndicate linked to robberies that took place in Gauteng, North West and other crimes in KZN.

Lt Gen Mene reiterated that these speedy arrests is testament to the synergy and unity that defines our members and units including the excellent relationship with the security companies. 

“I want to emphasize the incredible dedication and bravery displayed by those involved in the line of duty. Criminals are warned that the long arm of the law, reaches far and wide. There is no hiding place, no sanctuary  for those who choose a path of crime. Well done to the team, your selflessness, courage and determination for the safety of our citizens is commendable,” Mene concluded.
