Two alleged murder suspects, aged 17 and 27, were apprehended by members of the Provincial Anti-Gang Unit within 24 hours after two boys were shot and killed in Bethelsdorp, on Monday, July 8.
Police spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg, said this followed the discovery of the body of Malique Arnolds (15) was found with gunshot wounds, at Rensburg Street, Arcadia, on Monday, July 8, at approximately 13:00, in Bethelsdorp. In an unrelated incident, police responded to a complaint at approximately 15:00 at the corner of Sunflower and Carney Streets, Arcadia, where the body of Luciano Bailey (15) was found with multiple wounds to his upper body.
She said, according to the information on the day of the incidents, the shootings were allegedly gang related, and the Provincial Anti-Gang unit took over the investigation.
“A thorough investigation by the team led to the positive identification of the offenders involved in the murders,” she added.
Janse Van Rensburg also added, “Yesterday, July 9, at about 14:00, the detectives arrested two suspects, aged 17 and 27, from their respective homes in Gqeberha on charges of murder.”
The 17-year-old suspect is appearing in court at Nerina House today, July 10, while the 27-year-old suspect will appear at the Gqeberha Magistrate’s Court tomorrow, July 11.
Acting Nelson Mandela District Commissioner, Brigadier Ronald Koll, commended the detective officers for the swift investigation that led to the arrests.
“The dedication, commitment and professionalism of these officers undoubtedly contributes to the safety and security of our community”, he concluded.
