An alleged business robbery suspect was fatally wounded after their getaway vehicle was involved in a serious collision at the corners of Kempston and Neil Boss Roads in Sidwell today, 30 April.
According to Captain André Beetge, police spokesperson, it is alleged that at about 10:50, five suspects entered a retail shop at the corners of Kempston and Stanford Roads and held the staff at gunpoint.
“They demanded cash and an unknown amount of cash, a cellphone and stock to the estimated value of R5 000 was taken. During the robbery, a female cashier (age unknown) was shot in her leg. The suspects left in two vehicles, a white Honda Ballade and a silver Citroen,” Beetge said.
During their getaway, the Honda Ballade collided into a red VW Caddy, who in turn bumped into a truck.
“The suspect (driver) in the Honda Ballade died on the scene while another suspect (passenger) was injured. The other suspects fled the scene. The injured suspect was taken to hospital under police guard. The driver of the VW Caddy was also taken to hospital. The truck driver did not sustain any injuries.”
Some of the stolen property was found in the Honda Ballade.
Police are investigating a case of business robbery and culpable homicide.
“Names of the deceased and injured are unknown at this stage. More arrests are expected soon,” Beetge added.
