MALETSWAI – The Eastern Cape Department of Transport’s all-women road safety campaign has netted 19 suspected drunk drivers during an overnight law enforcement operation in Maletswai this weekend.

According to the Department of Transport and Community Safety’s spokesperson Unathi Binqose, the launch took place yesterday in the Joe Gqabi District to mark Women’s Month, the campaign began with road safety education during the day before shifting to a targeted drunk driving operation overnight.

“What followed was a powerful demonstration of professionalism, dedication and a no-nonsense approach by women traffic officers committed to making our roads safer,” he said. “This operation demonstrates the department’s Women’s Month campaign of visibility, prevention and decisive law enforcement. The department will tolerate no reckless behaviour on our roads.”

Their efforts have also been commended by Eastern Cape Transport MEC, Xolile Nqatha.

“The women of the Eastern Cape Department of Transport have sent a powerful message that road safety knows no gender, it demands commitment, professionalism and courage. Their decisive action in removing suspected drunk drivers from our roads is a reminder that every life saved matters,” he said.

“As we celebrate Women’s Month, we salute these remarkable officers for leading from the front in protecting our communities. To those who continue to drink and drive, our message is simple: there is no room for recklessness on our roads, and the law will catch up with you.”

The campaign will continue throughout Women’s Month, with similar operations planned across the province.

The department reiterated its message, “if you drink and drive, expect to face the full might of the law.”
