IT is said that the best things in life are free. Well, anybody who has ever gone horse-racing, will undoubtedly testify to that.

And come the weekend of May 10 and 11, the racing will not only be free, but it will also showcase the best on offer in the Eastern Cape when a two-day festival of racing and entertainment will take place at the Fairview Racecourse in Port Elizabeth.

Friday sees the running of the highly anticipated final leg of the World Sports Betting Eastern Cape Poly Challenge.

The WSB East Cape Poly Challenge is similar to a triple crown event, wherein horses compete over three races.

To win the R250 000 bonus, a horse must win all three legs.

But seeing that this is not possible any more, Let’s Play Ball, Breakfast Club and Sao Paulo will compete for the R50 000 consolation prize on offer for the horse that amasses the most points over the three races. Points were scored as follows: First – 10; Second – 6; Third – 4; Fourth – 3; Fifth – 2; Sixth – 1.

Let’s Play Ball on 10 points, Breakfast Club on nine and Sao Paulo with three points are the only runners in contention and with a R50 000 carrot dangling in front of them, they are sure to give it their all.

Saturday’s feature race is the World Sports Betting East Cape Derby (Listed) over 2400m.

But the World Sports Betting East Cape Derby Raceday is much more than just a race day. It’s a day of fun and family time – all for free, of course. Gates open at 11:00 and general entrance to the Fairview racecourse is free. There are beautiful picnic spots available as well as unreserved seating for the public on the grandstand.

The little ones are in for a special treat as the Kids Fun Zone will offer free sweets, cold drinks, activities and entertainment.

A wide range of entertainment will be on offer between races, including fashion shows, performances by local artists and vehicle displays, to name but a few.

There will also be stacks of prizes and giveaways.

A limited number of seats are still available in the VIP hospitality venue. At R350 per person guests can enjoy a sumptuous lunch which includes complimentary welcome wines, lucky draws and other giveaways, as well as free table race cards.
