THE year drew to a close with a heart-warming gathering at the final Parents’ Breakfast Club organised by the Masifunde Learner Development organisation. This event was more than just a breakfast; it was a celebration of achievements, reflections on the past year, and a launchpad for exciting plans set for 2025. The parents of Masifunde came together, not just as guardians, but as an empowered community, ready to enhance the educational journey of their children.

Among the key highlights of the event was the announcement of empowerment sessions planned for next year. These sessions aim to fortify the role of parents in the academic lives of their children, providing them with the skills and knowledge necessary to create a supportive and motivating home environment. One of the standout initiatives is the beadwork training programme, which will cater for 15 parents. This training is generously led by a parent volunteer, showcasing the spirit of community and sharing that defines the Masifunde family.

Further exemplifying this spirit of community support, a notable act of kindness is the planned donation of a sewing machine to a parent in need.

The Parents’ Breakfast Club also highlighted the integral role of Masifunde’s social assistance department. This department is committed to encouraging the education support systems by attending to the home environment and parental involvement. It recognises that without adequate parental support at home, the academic potential of learners might remain unrealised.

The department’s efforts are multifaceted, offering individual counselling, family visits, and group support tailored to specific challenges or needs. These include support groups for LGBTIQ communities, positive masculinity, and initiatives focused on empowering girls.

Masifunde, a beacon of hope in Walmer Township, provides holistic and sustainable educational support to over 450 motivated school-going learners. Their comprehensive programmes encompass academic tutoring, social support, life skills training, and a range of extra-curricular activities spanning arts, media, and sport.

As the Parents’ Breakfast Club concluded, it was clear that the bond between parents and Masifunde is not just about educational support – but also about building a vibrant, empowered community ready to face the challenges and opportunities of the year ahead with optimism and strength.
