Sport, Recreation, Arts
and Culture MEC, Fezeka Nkomonye said it’s all systems
go for the COSAFA tournament starting on 6 July in Gqeberha
in the Eastern Cape.

Nkomonye says the
tournament does not only speak to the sporting sector, but the revival of the
Eastern Cape economy in the face of the pandemic.

“We took a decision
to support the tournament with logistics so as to make sure it takes off in the
Eastern Cape. We strongly feel we stand to gain more if this tournament is held
here in the province as this does not only speak to the sporting sector, but
the entire economic value chain of the province.

“We are talking about over ten
countries that have converged in the province, in our BnB’s, buying food and
all other things they will need during their stay. That is money coming into
the province at a time where businesses are suffering the most, especially the
tourism sector,” Nkomonye said.

COSAFA president,
Dr Phillip Chiyangwa said the tournament is not just a 13 day event, but there
are legacy projects that will benefit the people of the province long after the
tournament is over.

“Nelson
Mandela Bay is one of the premier sporting and tourist destinations in South
Africa and will provide the perfect backdrop to what we believe could be the
best COSAFA Cup competition yet.

“I must extend my sincere thanks to the Eastern
Cape Provincial Government for their valued support, as well as Nelson Mandela
Bay municipality for once again being such excellent hosts. The facilities on
show at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium and the other venues for the 2021 COSAFA
Cup are world-class and I am sure they will make entertaining football and give
our stars of the region the opportunity to shine.”

Sport is still
permitted under adjusted level 4 lockdown regulations, but without any
spectators. The tournament will take place under very strict regulations.
