A 26-year-old man was arrested on charges of attempted murder, reckless and negligent driving and failure to comply with a police instruction after a high speed chase ensued in Gqeberha during the early hours of this morning, February 9.
According to Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg, police spokesperson, it is alleged that at approximately 01:30 this morning the Gqeberha K9 members were busy with crime prevention patrols in Summerstrand when they noticed a vehicle driving slowly without any lights at the King’s Beach parking area.
“As the members entered the parking area, the vehicle started to speed off. A chase ensued and back-up was requested,” Janse van Rensburg said.
“Various stations and response vehicles joined in the chase and attempts to stop the double cab Colt LDV bakkie proved difficult, as the suspect sped towards the Algoa Park area, disregarding the traffic lights in his escape attempt.”
As the chase pursued towards Algoa Park, the driver attempted to force the police vehicle off the road.
“Warning shots were fired and the bakkie halted at the Chatty dip. The driver was arrested on the above mentioned charges.
“The LDV bakkie and its trailer was impounded and the suspect is expected to appear in the Gqeberha Magistrate’s Court soon.”
