A man has died after jumping off Shark Rock Pier at Hobie Beach in Summerstrand on Sunday, February 27, almost a month after a similar incident at the same spot.
Police spokesperson, Col. Priscilla Naidu, said that at approximately 18:00, the man was seen jumping off the pier. Bystanders managed to rescue him from the surf but he was already dead when they found him.
“Police have opened an inquest. The deceased is still unknown and police are appealing to anyone who can assist in identifying him, to contact SAPS Humewood on 041 504 5019/20,” Naidu said.
This is the second drowning incident that took place at the pier in a month.
On February 1 this year, Luthando Bailey (28) also jumped off the Shark Rock Pier and drowned, also at approximately 18:00.
Bailey tried swimming to shore but couldn’t. He was assisted but by the time he reached the shore, he was already dead.
