IF you like it hot and spicy, then this weekend’s Chilli Festival is calling your name.
Bay Chillis PE, which launched in 2017 and offers over 80 varieties of chillies, tested the waters last year, when they held their first chilli eating contest.
“The contest was a huge hit and therefore we have decided to make it an annual event – a Chilli Festival and Eating Contest, as a combined family event,” said Jennifer Kleinhans of Bay Chillis PE.
According to her, Gqeberha used to have a chilli festival many years ago.
“The last one was in 2011. It’s time to revive it again, and we’re very excited. We already have lots of vendors for the market and some brave contestants who will have to eat through 10 rounds of chillies, ending in the Carolina Reaper and the feared Chocolate Bhutlah!”
Bay Chillis PE specialises in super hot and exotic chillies.
It promises to be a fun day for the whole family, with various market stalls joining on the day to showcase and sell their goods, the chilli eating competition, food trucks, live music, bouncy castles and more.
The Chilli Festival will take place at Londt Park Sports Club in Fernglen on Saturday, March 12, from 12:00 to 17:00.
For the very brave, the chilli eating contest will take place at 16:00.
There are prizes up for grabs, including a R1 000 first place cash prize.
Contestants are over-18 only.
