WHAT happens after happily ever after? Well, the Alexander Road High School 2022 production of Into the Woods, the stage musical by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine, is a fresh take on familiar fairytales intertwined to answer this exact question.
This is a Broadway classic which features characters everyone knows, from beloved fairytales such as, Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Rapunzel, and Jack and the Beanstalk. These characters strike a chord with most of us from childhood memories of Grimm’s fairytales or a Disney classic movie; however, in this production, the familiar folk of these fractured fairytales cross each other’s paths with a contemporary edge to tell stories of wishes granted and the price paid to get what you wish for.
The production is staged and directed by Greg Everard, well known for award-winning shows for the school such as Shrek – the Musical, The Crucible, The Addams Family and RodgersandHammerstein’s Cinderella.
The creative team is completed with musical direction by Dario Broccardo, vocal direction by Debbie Everard and choreography by Chireen Ferreira.
David Limbert, of Magnetic Storm, will again mentor the backstage crew, as well as design the lighting for the production.
The musical, staged in the school hall, will be brought to life by a fresh group of budding young thespians.
With the unfortunate last-minute cancellation of the school’s 2021 production of Into the Woods, owing to COVID-19 lockdown, the cast is excited to finally have the opportunity to perform this much-loved musical.
The show will run from May 3 to 14 with two matinees on May 7 and 14.
Tickets cost R95 for evening shows which will start at 19:30, R85 for matinees which will start at 14:00 and R80 for block bookings of 20 people or more.
Tickets are available online from www.quicket.co.za.
