REAL Madrid FC were crowned in the Walmer Football Association (WAFA) Easter Tournament after they defeated Young Cosmos FC 5-4 on penalties at Walmer Community Soccer Fields on Saturday.
Madrid, which is the side that produced young stars like Azola Matrose, gave Walmer Stars a 3-0 hiding during their semi-final.
Young Cosmos secured a hard-fought 3-2 win over Morning Stars in their semi-final. It was crunch time during the finals but Madrid emerged as winners. After their 1-1 draw against Cosmos in regulation time, Madrid won the penalty shoot-out 5-4.
The WAFA Easter Tournament defending champions scooped the first prize of R10 000, a floating trophy and gold medals, while Cosmos received R5 000 and silver medals.
Madrid FC coach and chairperson, Siphiwo Rabie Gongqa, told PE Express that he thanked his club for their dedication and determination.
Gongqa said, “Our success as a club is dedicated to Christopher Muller, who sponsored our club.
“He helped us a lot and we are so thankful for his contribution. We look forward to defending our title next season.”
