Five people were killed in two separate accidents that occurred this weekend in Nelson Mandela Bay.

According to Colone Priscila Naidu, police spokesperson, it is alleged that on Friday, May 27 at about 19:00, Quinton van Jaarsveld (age unknown) from Kariega was riding his motorbike on Rocklands Road heading in the direction of Gqeberha when he collided with a cow.

“He died on the scene. A case of culpable homicide is under investigation,” Naidu said.

In the second accident, four people died on impact last night, May 28 in a head-on collision on the R75 in Despatch.

“It is alleged that at about 22:50 police responded to a complaint of an accident involving a truck and a Toyota Yaris. It is further alleged that the Toyota Yaris was driving on the wrong side of the road in the direction of the oncoming traffic on the R75.

“The truck that was transporting lead warned the oncoming vehicle by flicking his lights, however, he could not avoid the head-on collision. All four occupants (two men and two women) in the Toyota Yaris died.”

Police traced the family of one person, presumably the driver, while the identity of the other three passengers are unknown at this stage.

SAPS Despatch are investigating a case of culpable homicide and are appealing to anyone who can assist in tracing the next of kin of the unknown passengers to contact SAPS Despatch on 082 441 7828 or 041 933 8000 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or their nearest police station.
